"It is encouraging that Turkish President Erdogan has now handed over the ratification protocol to the Turkish Parliament," says Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson. Kristersson was speaking at a press conference following the announcement of President Erdogan officially submitting Sweden's NATO membership application to its national parliament on 23 October. Ankara has accused Sweden of harbouring outlawed Kurdish militants, and has demanded their extradition.
"Our position is clear: the government supports Stockholm's accession to the Atlantic Alliance...Completing the ratification process is now just a technical matter", Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Tuesday.
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he will back Sweden's NATO candidacy if the European Union resumes membership talks with Ankara. "Open the way to Turkey's membership of the European Union" he says, speaking at a press conference in Istanbul, "and then we will open it for Sweden". Erdogan's comments come on the eve of a NATO summit in Vilnius, the Lithuanian capital.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday he would only back Sweden's NATO candidacy if the European Union resumes long-stalled membership talks with Ankara.
Turkey has blocked Stockholm's membership bid since last year.
