Tourism agencies are celebrating as Inca citadel Machu Picchu reopens to tourist after a month of unrest.
In Peru, the ancient Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, reopened to visitors on Wednesday, 25 days after it closed amid the demonstrations that have shaken the country since December. The famous citadel which was built in the 15th century is Peru's most famous attraction, and tourism is a crucial sector in the country's economy. Tourists stranded in the small town serving Machu Picchu, the Inca jewel of Peru's travel industry, wait in line to sign up for evacuation as nationwide anti-government protests continue to rock the South American country. At least 44 people are said to have been killed in clashes between protesters and Peruvian police as calls intensify for President Dina Boluarte to step down. The protests are now in their second month, having been triggered by the ousting and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo in early December.
Local authorities on Friday began helping hundreds of stranded tourists evacuate Machu Piccu town, near the renowned Peruvian archaeological reserve, after heavy flooding carrying rocks and mud blocked the railway used to exit the area
The United Nations is warning Peru's famed Machu Picchu ruin is being threatened by tonnes of tourist trash left behind at the site. Paul Chapman reports.
