Cases are soaring across China, with hospitals struggling and pharmacy shelves stripped bare in the wake of the government's sudden decision to lift years of lockdowns, quarantines and mass testing. Beds are full and patients are left on stretchers in crowded corridors in Chongqing hospital's emergency ward, as the number of Covid cases soar across China. The southwest city was locked down for nearly a month in November. Since, Covid has swept through the city as China dismantled its strict zero-Covid policy in early December.

Chinese authorities say there was no significant rise in the number of covid-19 infections during the Lunar New Year holiday. According to official data the number of serious cases and deaths are trending downward. FRANCE 24's correspondent in China Yena Lee has more from Beijing.
