Beds are full and patients are left on stretchers in crowded corridors in Chongqing hospital's emergency ward, as the number of Covid cases soar across China. The southwest city was locked down for nearly a month in November. Since, Covid has swept through the city as China dismantled its strict zero-Covid policy in early December.
Crematoriums across China are straining to deal with an influx of bodies as the country battles a wave of Covid cases that authorities have said is impossible to track. Cases are soaring across China, with hospitals struggling and pharmacy shelves stripped bare in the wake of the government's sudden decision to lift years of lockdowns, quarantines and mass testing. Some vehicles have been stationed outside this Beijing crematorium for hours, waiting to enter Dongjiao Crematorium. Across the whole of China, crematoriums are struggling to deal with an influx of bodies, as the country battles a wave of Covid cases that authorities have admitted is “impossible” to track.
Chinese authorities say there was no significant rise in the number of covid-19 infections during the Lunar New Year holiday. According to official data the number of serious cases and deaths are trending downward. FRANCE 24's correspondent in China Yena Lee has more from Beijing.
In China, there are fears not just of a Covid wave but maybe a tsunami. Funeral parlours are overwhelmed and hospitals are packed with elderly patients on respirators. This comes after the lifting of China's zero-Covid restrictions following protests. The World Health Organization, meanwhile, is pointing the finger, saying China's official virus data is being under-reported.
