Images taken from the town of Chasiv Yar show smoke rising from the direction of Bakhmut following shelling. The head of Russia's Wagner mercenary group said that his forces control more than half of the embattled eastern Ukraine town of Bakhmut, the stage for the longest battle of Russia's offensive. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warns that the eastern Ukrainian town of Bakhmut may fall into Russian hands in the coming days following months of intense fighting."We can not rule out that Bakhmut may eventually fall in the coming days," Stoltenberg tells reporters in Stockholm on the sidelines of a meeting of EU defence ministers. Images show the aftermath of a missile that hit near a kindergarten in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine. The missile carved a huge crater in front of the kindergarten, which had some 250 pupils and 70 staff before the war broke out. Debris from the strike, which sparked a small fire in the building and smashed windows, was strewn around the playground and lay near colourful murals on a school building. IMAGES
Smike rises over the cities of Bakhmut and Soledar in east Ukraine where the ongoing battle for control was described as "bloodiest" of the war so far by Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhaylo Podolyak. Zelensky meets military officials and hands out awards to Ukrainian servicemen, who have been holding back a fierce and months-long Russian military campaign against the city. The brutal trench warfare and artillery battles around Bakhmut -- once known for its vineyards and cavernous salt mines -- have flattened large parts of the city and its surroundings.
