Guatemala's Fuego volcano erupts during the night for the fifth time this year, spewing lava and ash into the air. IMAGES
Ashy smoke billows and lava flows from Mount Stromboli in Italy after a 4.6 magnitude tremor on Sunday, caused by the 'sciara del fuoco' section of the volcano that broke off and slammed into the sea, triggering a tsunami wave off the volcanic island. The wave, which was about one and a half metres high, did not reach the coast. According to the Civil Protection Services no damage was reported.
The Cumbre Vieja volcano continues to spew lava and ashes in La Palma, one of Spain's Canary Islands, where coastal residents are confined to their homes over fears of toxic gases as the lava hits the sea.
The eruption sent plumes of ash rising a few kilometres above the top of the volcano and, pushed by the wind towards the south, covered nearby cities.
Indonesia's Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes, erupts, belching out huge clouds of smoke and ash that billow down the sides of its rumbling crater. The volcano, near Indonesia's cultural capital Yogyakarta, shoots hot ash into the air around three dozen times throughout the day - some of it travelling as far as three kilometres (two miles) away from its peak.
