Peru: Protesters block streets in Arequipa over ousting of president

Description

Hundreds of protesters block the Alfredo Rodriguez Ballon International Airport and the Pan-American Highway in Arequipa, Peru's second largest city, against the ousting of former President Pedro Castillo and despite new President Dina Boluarte's announcement to bring forward the general elections to April 2024 instead of 2026. Protesters have demanded fresh elections and the resignation of new President Dina Boluarte, following the arrest of her leftist predecessor Castillo last week after he attempted to dissolve Congress and rule by decree. Lima, Jun 19 (EFE).- Thousands of supporters of both the leftist Pedro Castillo and right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori marched this Saturday in Lima as Peruvians were still waiting for their next president to be confirmed. With 100 percent of the ballots counted, Castillo received 50.12 percent of the vote and Fujimori garnered 49.87 percent, a margin of victory of just 44,058 votes. But the leftist candidate has not been officially declared the winner due to appeals filed by Fujimori in a bid to annul 200,000 votes cast in rural, highland areas that overwhelmingly support Castillo.
