Russia struck the Black Sea port city of Odesa for a second night in a row in a drone barrage that damaged a warehouse, charred dozens of trucks and injured two drivers in fiery explosions that led officials to suspend ferry service between Romania and Ukraine, officials said. The attacks came the day after a Russian missile and drone attack killed two people in a grain warehouse in Odesa and badly damaged an abandoned high-rise hotel. Ukraine’s air force said it downed 26 of 38 drones launched by Russia overnight. Ukraine has received US Abrams battle tanks, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Monday, boosting Kyiv's forces as they seek to break through heavily-fortified Russian defensive lines. The announcement came just after Ukraine claimed it had killed the commander of Russia's Black Sea fleet in a missile strike on Moscow's naval headquarters in Crimea last week in what would be a major embarrassment for Russia.
Speaking at the Ramstein Air Base, Germany, US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin says American M1 Abrams tanks "will be entering Ukraine soon." The tanks will be armed with controversial armour-busting depleted uranium rounds. Representatives of dozens of countries that support Kyiv are meeting in Germany to discuss new aid for Ukraine ahead of an address to the UN General Assembly by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Washington had promised the 31 tanks to Kyiv in early 2023, part of more than $43 billion in security assistance pledged by the United States since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
