Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims cheer Pope Francis as the pontiff arrives at a Lisbon park for an homage to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at a global jamboree. It marks the pope's second mass event with participants at this year's World Youth Day, which is actually a six-day extravaganza and happens to be the largest Catholic gathering in the world. Hundreds of people gather in Athens to show their support for migrants and refugees on World Refugee Day, one of several events organised in the Greek capital to send a message of solidarity around the world. The policy of Greece's conservative government, which was voted in nearly a year ago, is to make the country a "less attractive" destination to migrants. The European Union will provide Greece "all the necessary operational support" to help tackle the migration surge from neighbouring Turkey, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says. The EU dispatched its highest officials to Turkey and Greece amid concern over a fresh migrant crisis and allegations that Ankara was trying to "blackmail" the bloc by opening its borders to thousands of refugees seeking to flee to Europe.
