A hat belonging to Napoleon Bonaparte when he was French emperor sold for a record of nearly two million euros, according to the French auction house, Osenat, in Fontainebleau. It went for 1.932 million euros - breaking the previous record for a Napoleonic hat, held by the same auction house, of 1.884 million euros in 2014 shelled out by a South Korean businessman.
One of the unique hats that Napoleon Bonaparte was believed to have worn when he ruled 19th century France was bought by an anonymous buyer.
A Napoleon I bicorne hat and some twenty other objects from the same collection are being exhibited in Paris ahead of their sale by the Osenat auction house on 19 November. "The hat alone represents Napoleon's image throughout the world," says auctioneer Jean-Pierre Osenat. Valued at between 600,000 and 800,000 euros, it will have a starting price of 500,000 euros, according to the president of Osenat Auctions.
A gold, ruby and diamond ring worn by American rapper Tupac Shakur during his last public appearance sold for $1 million at auction in New York on July 25.
The small thatched model building was put up for sale by its British owners over fears it would one day be stolen.
