Iceland declares state of emergency ahead of expected volcanic eruption

Description

Faced with a series of earthquakes and signs of magma propagation underground, Icelandic authorities evacuated a town of 4,000 inhabitants in the southwest of the country on Saturday. They fear a volcanic eruption in the days to come. Emergency shelters and assistance centres have been opened in several nearby cities as our Science editor Julia Sieger explains.
