Taksim Square, considered the heart of modern Istanbul, is empty as Turkey bans its citizens from leaving home for 48 hours to fight the spread of the coronavirus. Istanbul, Turkey's largest city of about 15 million people, has emerged as the country's virus epicentre with more than 60 percent of the nationwide cases. Turkey has registered more than 47,000 COVID-19 cases -- ranking it among the 10 most infected countries in the world and has recorded over a thousand deaths. IMAGES
Turkish police have sealed off Istanbul's central Taksim Square to prevent any May Day protests, with scuffles breaking out in the nearby Besiktas district after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warned unions to stay away from any provocative steps. The stepped-up security measures come a day after Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said authorities had designated 40 areas for May Day celebrations with the exception of the emblematic Taksim Square.
