A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas appeared to hold Friday after 11 days of deadly fighting that pounded the Palestinian enclave and forced countless Israelis to seek shelter from rockets. FRANCE 24's International Affairs Editor, Philip Turle, gives his analysis.
After 51 days of war, both Israel's government and Hamas are claiming victory. A fledgling Hamas movement got a much-needed boost to its credentials as a resistance movement and tightened its grip on Gaza. The Israelis succeeded in destroying a good part of the tunnel network used to smuggle goods and launch attacks... That's the short view. But what happens when the dust settles?

While the ceasefire brought a sense of calm was restored to the Gaza Strip after five days of rockets fired, an air of unease and anger lingered amongst Palestinians.
The escalation in violence has seen around 33 people dead in five days of clashes
