Smoke billows over the northern Gaza Strip after Israeli air strikes. The strikes come ahead of the start of a four-day truce between Israel and Hamas. The Palestinian militant group is set to free at least 50 of the hostages they took in their deadly October 7 attack. In turn, Israel would release at least 150 Palestinian prisoners and allow more humanitarian aid into the coastal territory after more than six weeks of bombardment, heavy fighting and crippling siege. Strikes on the northern Gaza Strip are seen from the Israeli town of Sderot, as the Israeli military vowed to intensify bombardments. The health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip said on Tuesday that 5,791 people had been killed in the territory since the outbreak of the war with Israel, when Hamas militants stormed into Israel from Gaza on October 7, killing at least 1,400 people and taking more than 220 hostages, according to Israeli officials.
