Los Angeles (USA), Jun 10 (EFE / EPA) .- (CAMERA: Etienne Laurent) Dozens of people have gathered Thursday in cities of the United States to ask the Government to share covid-19 vaccines with the rest of the world, under the claim that the hoarding of doses "is immoral and dangerous."
Interpol has warned that criminal organizations are planning to infiltrate or disrupt supply chains related to COVID-19 vaccines. But that's not the only way bad guys might try to cash in on the coming global vaccine bonanza. According to Business Insider, groups may try to sell counterfeit or expired vaccines, on a small-scale or a large-scale basis. Criminals may also try to 'sell' vaccines online, in an attempt to steal personal data and credit card numbers. They may also try to extort companies, or hold supply chains hostage in return for ransom money. Finally, they could do a better job than governments at vaccinating neighborhoods, thereby installing themselves as a semi-legitimate, parallel government.
California biotech company Vaxart is under federal investigation and is being sued by a number of investors. According to CNN, Vaxart was served with a grand jury subpoena in July from the US District Court for the Northern District of California. It's under fire for exaggerating its involvement in the US government's Operation Warp Speed program for developing COVID-19 vaccines and treatments. Vaxart issued a June press release saying 'Vaxart's Covid-19 Vaccine Selected for the US Government's Operation Warp Speed.' The news pumped Vaxart's stock price from $3 to $17. Hedge fund Armistice Capital, which partly controlled Vaxart, sold its shares, profiting more than $200m. A few weeks before it announced its supposed inclusion in the Operation Warp Speed program, Vaxart granted amendments to its warrants agreements. That allowed Armistice to sell almost all of their stock, which they did once the stock price skyrocketed. In July, the HHS said it had neither entered into a funding agreement nor negotiations with Vaxart.
President Donald Trump let fly against demonstrators in Portland, Oregon, on Sunday evening, who were protesting against the perceived racism of Columbus Day. Crowds dispersed on Sunday evening after police designated the gathering as a riot and appeared to make several arrests. According to Business Insider, Trump doubled down on his 'law and order' campaign rhetoric Monday morning. Referring to protesters as 'animals,' Trump retweeted a video of the protests, in which statues of Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt were toppled. He also got a jab in at the Great State of California, tweeting that it was 'going to hell' and exhorted, 'Vote Trump!'
