Protests in north Haiti overshadow memorial mass for slain president

Cap-Haitien, Jul 22 (EFE).- A church mass on Thursday in north Haiti's Cap-Haitien in honor of assassinated president Jovenel Moïse took place alongside heated protests, especially in the center of the city, where burning barricades marked the eve of his burial.The north of Haiti, of which the late head of state was a native, has shown greater sentiment for the president than the rest of the country after the assassination at dawn on July 7 at his home in the capital.The atmosphere in Cap-Haitien has been heating up in recent days and the fuse was lit in the early afternoon, after the most fanatical supporters of the president entered the cathedral where mass was taking place.     Port-au-Prince, Jul 20 (EFE).- The Haitian government on Tuesday held official observances in honor of the murdered Jovenel Moise, who is to be laid to rest Friday at his family's crypt in the northern city of Cap-Haitien.All of the members of the outgoing and incoming administrations were present for a ceremony in Port-au-Prince, though the president's widow, Martine Moise, did not attend.The erstwhile first lady was badly wounded in the attack that ended her husband's life and only returned to Haiti last Saturday after spending more than a week at a hospital in Miami.Haiti is holding 18 Colombian mercenaries and two dual Haitian-US nationals in connection with the assassination.
