Shona community members receive Kenya citizenship status after decades of statelessness

Nairobi, Jul 28 (EFE/EPA).- After decades of statelessness, over 900 members of Shona community in Kenya received Wednesday identity cards and certificates that recognize them as Kenyan citizens during a ceremony in Nairobi.It is believed that the Shona began arriving in Kenya in the 1930s, primarily from what is now Zimbabwe, and more came in the early 1960s as missionaries.The UNHCR estimates that there are approximately 12 million stateless people in the world, with over 715,000 living in Africa.
