Protest in Brussels calls on EU to end private environmental arbitration

Description

Brussels (Belgium), Sep 28 (EFE) .- (Camera: Leo Rodríguez) Several environmental and citizen organizations participated on Tuesday in a protest in Brussels to demand that the European Union abandon the Energy Charter Treaty, which allows multinationals to resort to private arbitration courts in environmental disputes with States.FOOTAGE OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTEST IN BRUSSELS. SOUNDBITES FROM PABLO SÁNCHEZ CENTELLAS, RESPONSIBLE FOR COMMUNICATION OF THE EUROPEAN UNION OF PUBLIC SERVICESTRANSLATIONThe investment policy that the EU has today practically favors only the large multinationals, which are the ones that design this policy. We have seen how multinational oil and gas companies lead States to international arbitration because they change their policy, for example, with 'fracking' or with oil drilling. We cannot be at the expense of what the board of directors of Shell, British Petroleum or any multinational company decides"We had entered a total schizophrenia. We hope that this judgment of the CJEU is a total change of course and the last nail in the coffin of the Charter.
