Celebratory gunfire echoed across Kabul on Tuesday (August 31) as Taliban fighters took control of the city's airport following the withdrawal of the last US troops in Afghanistan, ending two decades of war. FRANCE 24's Cyril Payen tells us more.
Taliban fighters chant victory slogans next to the US embassy in Kabul as they mark the first anniversary of their return to power in Afghanistan, following a turbulent 12 months that has seen women's rights crushed and a humanitarian crisis worsen.
The explosion killed almost 200 people and 13 American troops at Kabul's airport in August last year.
One month after the Islamists' "unimaginable" takeover of Afghanistan's capital, US items left behind in the airport are the remnants of the two-decade American intervention that ended in an "unthinkable" exit.
A Pakistan International Airlines jet touches down in Kabul, before making a return flight to Islamabad. This is the first international commercial flight to leave Kabul since the Taliban retook power last month, offering some hope to Afghans still desperate to leave the country.
