The eruption of Mount Nyiragongo on May 22 displaced hundreds of thousands of people in and around the city of Goma, in North Kivu province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The tremors and aftershocks that followed caused widespread fear and threatened new disasters, prompting a mass evacuation. Teams from Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) are currently providing humanitarian assistance in Goma, Sake, and Rutshuru.
The Nyiragongo volcano in DR Congo has been spewing ash for almost a fortnight forcing hundreds of thousands to flee the city of Goma. They are now waiting for humanitarian aid.
When Nyiragongo volcano erupted, residents of Goma in DR Congo were evacuated by authorities and many fled to Rwanda where they now live in a shelter in a camp set up by the UN's refugee agency (UNHCR).
Extremist militants waging an insurgency in Mozambique's northern Cabo Delgado province have in recent months intensified their campaign to create a caliphate in the gas-rich region. The violent rebellion has displaced at least 500,000 people, according to government and claimed more than 2,400 lives, according to the US-based Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) group, which also has listed 711 organised attacks since the rebellion was launched in 2017.
In a Guatemalan village neighbouring the Pacaya Volcano, residents are preparing tp be able to take their pets and livestock with them in case of an eruption. Guatemala has 30 volcanos, including two other active ones.
