Alongside the all-new fifth generation Sportage, Kia brings an electrified version of the brand’s longest running nameplate to the windmill-lined roadways of the California desert for its National Press Introduction. The 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid (HEV) is the third model in an ongoing cadence of eco-minded offerings guided by Kia’s global EV strategy, ‘Plan S.’ This newest Kia follows in the footsteps of the recently launched EV6 and the Sorento PHEV to serve as another example of Kia’s multiple pathways to electrification.Arriving in showrooms this spring, the Sportage Hybrid will deliver an ideal mix of fuel efficiency and power along with an abundance of room for gear. Significantly larger than the previous generation Sportage, the Hybrid will allow owners to enjoy class-leading rear seat legroom and rear cargo capacity. The “Opposites United” design language employed on Sportage brings a bold blend of modern styling and sporty visual elements, while its interior offers the latest in technology, including an expansive list of ADAS features and dual panoramic display screens (12.3-inch instrument panel display and 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen display) for nearly 25 inches of viewing. This Sportage’s electrified performance comes from a seamless hybrid powertrain combining a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine with a 44-kilowatt motor to achieve up to 43 mpg. Together, engine and motor make 227 horsepower channeled to either the front wheels or an active all-wheel-drive system. The result is a fuel-sipping compact SUV that delivers an engaging driving experience.
The fifth generation of the Kia Sportage is being offered for the first time in a version specially designed for Europe and with an almost completely electrified range of drives including plug-in, full and mild hybrids. What hasn't changed is the outstanding level of safety: the brand's best-selling SUV has now received the top rating of "5 stars" in the Euro NCAP - just like the third and fourth model generations (test years 2010 and 2015).The official European safety test, the requirements of which have continuously increased in recent years, is divided into four test categories. With 87 percent, the new Sportage achieved an outstanding value for occupant protection for adults. The testers emphasized the stability of the passenger cell in offset frontal collisions as well as the very good protection of the knees and thighs of the driver and front passenger, regardless of their size and seating position. The occupant protection for children is also at a top level (86 percent). Impacts on all critical body areas were minimized in both the dummies representing six-year-old children and those representing ten-year-olds. The safety assistants test, in which the new Sportage scored 72 percent, praised the performance of the Lane Keeping Assist and Intelligent Speed Assist, which are also standard equipment, as is a multi-collision brake. Also standard is the front collision warning, whose cyclist detection was highlighted and which made a significant contribution to the good 66 percent result in the category "Protection of vulnerable road users".
A number of new technologies optimize the precision and control of the chassis in a wide variety of weather and road conditions. The standard electronic damper control (Electronic Control Suspension, ECS) in the GT-line version increases comfort and safety thanks to the continuous damping control. The system reacts to body movements and steering inputs and changes the damping behavior at lightning speed in order to counteract the vehicle's diving, pitching and rolling movements when cornering. It also adjusts the damping force in the case of obstacles in order to cope with them as comfortably as possible and to reduce the influence of post-vibrations on the wheels.A premiere for the Sportage is the “All-Terrain-Mode”, which will be available for the plug-in hybrid version with all-wheel drive. The system offers intelligent support when driving off-road or on snow by automatically optimizing the vehicle settings depending on the selected mode and thus helping the SUV to achieve maximum traction on muddy, sandy or snowy surfaces.
