Hundreds of migrants bundled in coats and blankets formed a long line in cold winter air at the U.S.-Mexico border on Thursday (December 22), hoping the Christmas period will bring an end to uncertainty over their hopes of securing asylum in the United States.
Covid-19 restrictions on migrants at the US-Mexico border were set to be lifted on Wednesday as ordered by a US court. But in a last-minute move, the US Supreme Court on Monday allowed the Trump-era policy to remain in place temporarily while a Republican legal challenge seeking to extend the measures is decided.
The US ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, says that Venezuelans attempting to cross into the United States from Mexico will not be allowed in, and will be returned to Mexico. Last week, Washington and Mexico City announced an agreement that would allow 24,000 Venezuelans to enter the United States if they can prove they have sponsorship, and only if they fly into the country. The deal mirrors a controversial push by former president Donald Trump to keep Central Americans fleeing poverty and violence inside Mexico while their claims are processed.
A group of migrants, most of them Central Americans, clashes with the Mexican National Guard near the southern border of Mexico, and are detained by immigration authorities.
Hundreds protest outside the migration office in the southern city of Tapachula, saying they're vulnerable to criminal extortion and kidnapping.
