EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell says that Russian President Vladimir Putin's electoral victory was "based on repression and intimidation". Speaking as he arrives for a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Borrell says "this has not been a free and fair election," but a vote held in a "highly restrictive environment." SOUNDBITE
The US State Department rejects an arrest warrant issued by a Venezuelan court for opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who claims to have won the country's disputed July presidential election. "The arbitrary and politically motivated action demonstrates the extraordinary lengths to which Nicolas Maduro will go to try and maintain power following his attempt to steal the July 28th presidential election," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters. The European Union tells Venezuela's government to stop targeting opposition leaders after authorities opened a criminal probe against the main challengers disputing the reelection of President Nicolas Maduro. "This needs to stop. We are calling on the authorities to stop this, this campaign of intimidation of the opposition and judicial intimidation," says EU spokesman Peter Stano in Brussels. SOUNDBITE
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says Nigel Farage's claim that the West provoked Russia's invasion of Ukraine is "completely wrong and only plays into Putin's hands". The far-right leader of Britain's anti-immigration Reform UK party said in a BBC interview Friday that "we've provoked this war", while adding that "of course" it was Russian president Vladimir Putin's "fault". "This kind of appeasement is dangerous for Britain's security, the security of our allies that rely on us, and only emboldens Putin further," Sunak tells reporters while on the campaign trail ahead of July 4 general elections. A screen shown at a briefing by Russia's Central Election Commission shows the expected results of the four presidential election candidates. Incumbent president Vladimir Putin is expected to receive 87.85% of the vote, while Communist Party candidate Nikolay Kharitonov comes in at second with 3.86%, New People candidate Vladislav Davankov is projected to receive 3.76%, and far-right Liberal Democratic Party leader Leonid Slutsky is set to get 2.97%.
