Rwandan court is expected to rule on Monday in the case of Paul Rusesabagina, a one-time hotel manager portrayed as a hero in a Hollywood film about the 1994 genocide, later accused by Rwanda's authorities of masterminding terrorism from exile. Rusesabagina, 67, denies all the accusations and says he was kidnapped from Dubai this year to be put on trial.
Paul Rusesabagina, the polarising hero of the hit movie "Hotel Rwanda," appears at court in Kigali after admitting to helping form an armed group but denying any role in its crimes. Rusesabagina is famous for his depiction by Don Cheadle in the 2004 film "Hotel Rwanda" in which a moderate Hutu is shown as saving hundreds of lives at a luxury hotel during the 1994 genocide, which left some 800,000, mostly Tutsi, dead. Rwanda's Court of Appeal on Monday upheld a 25-year prison term against ailing "Hotel Rwanda" hero Paul Rusesabagina on terrorism charges, rejecting a prosecution appeal to increase the penalty to life. FRANCE 24's Simon Wohlfahrt reports from Rwanda.
A Rwandan court finds former hotelier Paul Rusesabagina guilty on charges of terrorism. The 67-year-old is credited with saving hundreds of lives during the 1994 genocide, which inspired the Hollywood film "Hotel Rwanda". His family say Rusesabagina was kidnapped and dismiss the nine charges against him, including terrorism, as payback by a vengeful government for his outspoken views.
Twenty accused arrive for the verdict of their terrorism trial in Rwanda. Paul Rusesabagina, the 21st and most famous accused, has been boycotting the trial since March and did not come to court. Rwandan prosecutors have sought a life sentence for Rusesabagina, the 67-year-old former hotelier credited with saving hundreds of lives during the 1994 genocide, and whose actions inspired the Hollywood film "Hotel Rwanda". His supporters say the charges are politically motivated. IMAGES
