Koala population has declined by 30% since 2018: study

Description

Adelaide, Sep 20 (EFE).- The koala population across Australia has declined by 30 percent since 2018 due to factors such as climate change, land clearing, mining, agriculture and devastating bushfires, according to a report by the Australian Koalas Foundation (AKF) published on Monday. The report says that the population of these marsupials decreased from between 45,745 - 82,170 in 2018 to between 32,065 - 57,920 currently. The state of New South Wales, located along Australia's east coast and the country's most populous, reported a decline of 41 percent in the population of koalas, which are now extinct in 47 electorates, the document added. • Study: Superspreader Trump Rallies Generated 30,000 COVID-19 Cases And Over 700 Deaths

Researchers from Stanford University estimate President Donald Trump's series of campaign rallies have functioned as COVID-19 superspreader events. HuffPost reports Stanford University researchers say the events led to thousands of more cases and hundreds of more deaths than would have occurred otherwise. Though not necessarily among attendees, more than 30,000 new confirmed coronavirus cases and more than 700 deaths, arose because of the gatherings. HuffPost reports that among the 18 events studied, three of them ― in Tulsa, Oklahoma; Phoenix; and Henderson, Nevada ― took place indoors; the rest happened outdoors. Photos and video from Trump’s events showed that few attendees wore masks to help prevent the spread of the highly contagious disease. The Stanford findings appeared to back up one Oklahoma health official who suggested that the president’s rally contributed to a spike in COVID-19 cases around Tulsa in late June and early July. The communities in which Trump rallies took place paid a high price in terms of disease and death. Study authors, Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research

  • The Most Adorable Animals On Earth Are Dying Out--And It's Our Own Stupid Fault

New research published in PLOS One shows the koala bear population is in decline--and it's because of humans. According to CNN, a number of human-driven stressors are depressing koalas' immune systems, making them more susceptible to disease. Human encroachment, or farming land previously occupied by koalas, is a major factor. So is climate change, which is robbing the landscape of water and trees. CNN reports climate change is also contributing to the intensity of widespread bushfires in Australia, as seen in the record-breaking blazes of 2019 and 2020. World Wide Fund for Nature - Australia is trying to double koala numbers-- in part by planting seeds to grow more trees that grow koala food.
