Liberal politician Maria Corina Machado celebrates with supporters as she leads in the first round of Venezuela's opposition primary designed to select a rival to President Nicolas Maduro in 2024 elections. Machado however is currently disqualified and in theory cannot be a candidate in that election. A first bulletin from the commission that organised the internal elections gave Machado 552,430 out of 601,110 votes so far counted with 26% of the ballots counted. Her closest rival, Carlos Prosperi, who had denounced irregularities in the process, obtained 28,153 votes, with the rest polling less than 5,000. IMAGES

Crowds gather in Ghetto Heroes Square in Warsaw on the first day of commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the start of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, with Polish government officials and survivors in attendance. Ousmane Sonko, a Senegalese politician who came third in the country's last presidential election, makes his way to court where he faces a defamation trial. His convoy is flocked by crowds of supporters and police officers form barricades to keep the crowds back. Sonko is being sued by Tourism Minister Mame Mbaye Niang for "defamation, insult and forgery". He also faces separate charges of rape and making death threats. Sonko has denied the charges and accused authorities of trying to silence him and his party with arbitrary arrests. IMAGES
