A relative handful of Americans have received the vaccine to protect against the novel coronavirus. But according to HuffPost, it's unclear if those lucky few can still pass along the virus to others, even if they themselves aren't infected. Likewise, it's important to remember that even after getting the jab, it takes the body at least a month to build up its immunity to COVID-19. Therefore, it's essential to continue following proven public health measures, like universal masking, handwashing, and physical distancing. Experts say Americans shouldn't start to relax on observing these measures until roughly 70% of the population has been vaccinated.
Patients at a clinic run by the Boone County Health Department in West Virginia were supposed to receive Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday. But according to CNN, the 42 people were administered COVID-19 antibodies, instead. Officials said it was an isolated incident but didn't explain exactly how such a mix-up occurred. Fortunately, state and local health officials don't think they are at any risk of harm. The West Virginia National Guard issued a statement soon after, vowing to avoid such incidents in the future. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed who should be next in line to receive the recently released vaccine against COVID-19. The CDC said Sunday that frontline essential workers and people 75 and older should be next in line for coronavirus vaccines. Business Insider reports the US should have enough shots to complete the first two phases of vaccinations by sometime in February of 2021. Healthcare workers and residents of long-term care facilities have already started receiving their shots. The third round should go to those ages 65 to 74, those ages 16 to 64 with high-risk medical conditions, and any remaining unvaccinated essential worker.
The US government has ordered another 100 million doses of Moderna's coronavirus vaccine. This brings the total number of vaccines ordered to 200 million, says Business Insider. If the vaccine receives emergency-use authorization from the FDA, Moderna plans to deliver. The delivery will be for 20 million doses by the end of December with the rest over the start of 2021. The US still has the option to purchase another 300 million doses from Moderna. Everyone who wants the vaccine should be able to get one, timing is the main concern.
