Hong Kong police charged two executives from the pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper on Friday using a powerful new security law, a day after the company's newsroom was raided over articles it had published. Police said a 47-year-old and a 59-year-old were charged with "collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security". China's crackdown in Hong Kong has escalated dramatically with police arresting more than 50 opposition figures in their largest operation since a draconian security law was imposed on the financial hub.

An American citizen John Clancey, who works for the firm, was among those arrested in Hong Kong on Wednesday under a new national security law imposed by Beijing, two sources told AFP. Prominent Hong Kong democracy activist Agnes Chow has been arrested late at night under China's new national security. "It's now confirmed that Agnes Chow has been arrested for 'inciting secession' under the national security law," her Facebook account said. A police source confirmed to AFP that Chow was among 10 people arrested on Monday in a national security investigation. IMAGES
