French voters went to the polls on Sunday in the first round of regional elections seen as a bellwether for next year’s all-important presidential contest. First projections are trickling in from the all-important Ile-de-France region around Paris. As expected, conservative incumbent Valérie Pécresse is well ahead with about 36% of the vote, while a whopping five other candidates look set to clear the 10% hurdle to qualify for the second round.
