An Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) envoy says the bloc has "expressed concern over the resurgence of coup d'etats in the region, in non consensual, constitutional reform processes in some member states", during a press conference held in Lagos. Goodluck Jonathan adds "this impacts on peace, security and stability in the region." SOUNDBITE
West African leaders began a key summit to address the latest coup in the region. Emergency talks in the Ghanaian capital Accra were triggered after Burkina Faso on January 24 became the third member of the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to be overtaken by the military in less than two years - which Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo calls 'of grave concern' in his opening statement. Envoys from Mali's neighbours led by former Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan arrive in Bamako in a bid to mediate in an escalating political crisis ahead of new high-risk protests. IMAGES
The United States says it would refuse visas for extremist Israeli settlers who attack Palestinians, stepping up pressure to curb a wave of violence in the West Bank during the Gaza war. "The United States is taking action to address this escalating violence in the West Bank by implementing a new visa restriction policy," says US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.
