West African leaders began a key summit to address the latest coup in the region. Emergency talks in the Ghanaian capital Accra were triggered after Burkina Faso on January 24 became the third member of the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to be overtaken by the military in less than two years - which Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo calls 'of grave concern' in his opening statement. "We prioritise diplomatic negotiations and dialogue as the bedrock of our approach," says Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu, who is chairing an emergency summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja. After the coup on July 26, the bloc gave the military leaders a deadline of last Sunday to reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum, who is being held at the presidential palace in Niamey, or face the potential use of force.
