Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said on Wednesday he expects Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan to announce his decision concerning Turkey's ratification of Finland's NATO entry when the two meet in Ankara later this week. FRANCE 24's Jasper Mortimer reports from Ankara, Turkey.
The hold-up follows Ankara announcing it would not back Sweden's NATO bid following an anti-Turkey protest in Stockholm. Finland, it seems, is reassessing its options but still insist joining with Sweden is the number one option.
Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, asks the country's parliament to vote on Finland's application to joint the NATO defence alliance, saying "I wish that this decision will be good for our countries and our alliance". Erdogan's announcement comes as Finnish President, Sauli Niinistö, visits Ankara. SOUNDBITE
"About the NATO membership, we have to take it calmly and we have to wait for the elections in Turkey to take place" says Finnish President Sauli Niinisto. The comment comes after the Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs Pekka Haavisto announced Finland has to consider joining NATO without Sweden, whose bid appears to grind to a halt after Ankara blasted Stockholm over anti-Turkey protests. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told Sweden not to expect his backing for its bid to join NATO after Swedish police allowed a Quran to be burned by a protestor outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.
