Germany gives green light for delivery of Leopard tanks to Ukraine
Members of the G7 reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine and the war of aggression it is fighting. All seven countries pledged to continue to support Kyiv financially and with arms, while continuing on the path of sanctions against Moscow.
Germany's Defence Minister Boris Pistorius says he believes the EU member will manage to send a first battalion of tanks to war-torn Ukraine by April. "I think we could deliver at least one battalion in the first four months of this year. Three months maybe. And then we have to proceed as fast as possible of course," he tells reporters while on a visit to Warsaw. SOUNDBITE
Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands plan to provide Ukraine with at least 100 refurbished Leopard 1 battle tanks in the coming months.
After weeks of mounting pressure both at home and abroad, Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed on Wednesday that Berlin will provide Ukraine with Leopard 2 battle tanks.
A number of London police have stepped back from firearms duties after a fellow officer was charged with murder over the fatal shooting of a young black man, a force spokesman said Sunday. Police in Britain are not routinely armed and the small proportion who are authorised to carry guns are highly trained.
