Police uncovered some 67kg (147lbs) of cocaine hidden in hollowed-out pineapples at a Madrid market. Up to a kilo (2.2lbs) of cocaine was packed into individual cylinders, coated in wax and encased in the pineapples, reportedly in Costa Rica, before arriving for distribution in the Spanish capital.
Around 40 volunteers gather on Guacalillo Beach, on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, to clean its shores. "Costa Rica sells itself as a green country, but the reality is that there is a lack of awareness and education” says Montserrat Courrau, a participant in the cleanup day. Costa Rican sloths have been shown to have antibiotic-producing bacteria in their fur that keep pathogens that can make the animal sick at bay. Scientist Max Chavarria of the University of Costa Rica is researching whether this finding could have an application for humans.
Activists gather outside the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) in Costa Rica's capital San Jose, where for the first time in its history, a case will be heard about the legality of denying a woman access to abortion services.
