Israel’s government says a power imbalance has given judges and legal advisers too much sway over law-making and governance. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to press on with the changes despite the opposition.
Hundreds of Israeli lawyers decried the government's controversial plan to overhaul the judicial system on Thursday in a rare demonstration in the capital, Tel Aviv. Attornies said the proposal is a threat to democracy and will erode the Supreme Court's independence.
