Pope Francis spoke out once more about dangers of a global environmental catastrophe, saying that humanity "will go down" if it does not address the issue of climate change as he spoke to press on board his plane on Monday while returning to the Holy See from a trip to Colombia.
The zero-fuel airplane Solar Impulse 2 landed in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday night, completing at 35,000 kilometer trip across all the continents of the earth powered only by sunlight. Mission Control in Monaco cheered as Balloonist Bertrand Piccard piloted the craft back to the same location from which it took off back in March 2015. Although its 236 foot wingspan is wider than a 747 jumbo jet, the Solar Impulse weighs only 2.3 tons.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres says the world is racing toward a climate change disaster and dismissed the global response as woefully inadequate. He says current climate policies are taking the world to a 2.8-degree temperature rise by the end of the century. "That spells catastrophe. Yet the collective response remains pitiful," Guterres tells a news conference. SOUNDBITE
During a speech at the London School of Economics (LSE) ahead of the COP26 climate conference, US Special Envoy for Climate John Kerry emphasises the importance of accelerating efforts to combat climate change 'now', highlighting that 'mathematics and physics' and not 'ideology' should be driving the push.
