In Yakutsk, a city in Russia’s east Siberia, 450km south of the Arctic circle, local weather services warn that temperatures could sink as low as -62°C. “It feels like this is the coldest winter” says one resident, where the abnormal cold is even lower than the -40°C temperatures locals are used to.
Extreme winter weather caused the banks of a river in Spain to burst and forced over 100 flights to be cancelled in Munich.
Lisbon is on high alert after heavy rains caused flooding in buildings and tunnels, swept cars away, and killed at least one person. A 55-year-old woman was found dead in a flooded basement of her home.
