As fears of a possible Chinese invasion mount, Taiwan is conducting annual military drills that include training to respond to a simulated attack by Beijing. It is one of a number of ways the island is preparing for potential hostilities.
Taiwan kicked off civil defence drills in its central Taichung city on Thursday days after Beijing concluded war games around the island. The pre-planned annual series of drills, which help to raise readiness for natural disasters and other emergencies, were modified to include elements of warfare following the war in Ukraine and a heightened sense of threat from neighbouring China.
A Taiwanese Tuo Chiang missile corvette sails out of the island's Suao Naval Base during a third day of China's military drills. China said fighter jets carrying "live ammunition" had conducted "simulated strikes" near Taiwan on Monday, while the US said its guided-missile destroyer sailed through waters claimed by Beijing in a "freedom of navigation" operation. On Beigan island, part of Taiwan's Matsu archipelago that is within eyesight of China's mainland, 60-year-old chef Lin Ke-qiang says he does not want war. "The Russia-Ukraine war, that's terrifying. I feel very emotional seeing the people there become destitute and homeless", he says. China was due to hold live-fire drills on Monday to round off three days of military exercises in response to Taiwan's president meeting with the US House speaker.
