A stranded cargo ship causes river traffic to be halted on the Rhine in western Germany after suffering a technical fault, authorities say. The incident comes at a time when water transport is already suffering as the result of drought, which has caused the water in the river to drop to a level considered inaccessible for shipping. The vessel is stuck at St Goar and Oberwesel, between the cities of Mainz and Koblenz, river police say, adding that they expect to clear the stricken ship within a day. IMAGES
The Parana River, the tenth largest river basin in the world, is suffering its worst low in more than half a century, with experts unsure as to whether this owes to its natural cycle or to climate change.
Months of scarce rainfall and hot sunny weather drove water levels on the Rhine to a record low, forcing ship operators to suspend services to keep vessels from running aground.
The Rhine is one of Germany's key water routes for transporting goods, and vessels with bigger drafts might not be able to use the river if levels continue to fall.
