Firefighters in Spain and Portugal were battling to keep wildfires spanning thousands of hectares contained Monday as a scorching heatwave hit the Iberian peninsula, worsening conditions. A thousand firefighters were deployed in central and southern Portugal, supported by 12 water-bombing planes, to battle blazes, according to the national civil protection authority.
Firefighters in Spain and Portugal are still struggling to bring wildfires under control. Thousands of people have been driven from their homes, as temperatures reach over 46 degrees Celsius in parts of both countries.
More than 1,000 firefighters still battle to control the flames which broke out in the central Pedrogao Grande region over the weekend and spread at breakneck speed to neighbouring areas.
Portuguese fire crews are still wrestling with some 200 forest fires that have killed at least four people, while crews in Spain's Galicia region struggle to contain nine forrest fires. Mana Rabiee reports.
