The fires, sparked by a devastating heat wave, have threatened several rural towns, destroying at least 88 homes and sweeping through 47,000 hectares (116,000 acres) of forest, according to officials. Drone footage from Los Vilos captured the effects of the ongoing forest fires throughout the countryside of the South American nation of Chile. Raging fires have so far killed 11 people and destroyed over 400,000 acres of forest across Chile in the last week alone. Firefighters continue to battle the blazes but have only see limited success so far. Wildfires are fairly common in Chile during the summer but they have been particularly severe this year due to extremely high temperatures as well as a prolonged drought. Authorities are investigating whether some of the fires may have been started deliberately. Forty people have been detained for questioning in relation to possible arson.
