Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen announces an extension in mandatory military service from four months to one year, citing the threat from an increasingly hostile China. Beijing considers self-ruled, democratic Taiwan a part of its territory, to be taken one day, by force if necessary, and the island lives under the constant fear of a Chinese invasion.
Early on Sunday and Monday mornings, Chinese aircraft including fighter jets and drones crossed the median of the Taiwan Strait - a violation of an unofficial boundary tacitly accepted by both Beijing and Taipei.
In the wake of China’s unprecedented military drills, and with tensions in the region at a peak, Taiwan has put on its own show of force. This week, the island’s air force displayed its most advanced fighter jet, the US-made F-16V, as well as its own, domestically produced, air defence equipment.
Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen calls China's live-fire military drills around the island a "continued, deliberately heightened military threat".
China may be "positioning" itself for a military show of strength around Taiwan, including missile launches, ahead of a possible visit by a senior US politician to the island, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby says. SOUNDBITE
