Kosovo's Prime Minister Albin Kurti says in an interview with AFP he hopes to normalise relations with the country's arch-rival Serbia this year, following several rounds of failed talks between the two sides. "Normalisation of relations with Serbia I wish for this year, for 2024, and in the next years and decades I want to come out victorious on issues like social inequality, climate change and security threats," Kurti tells AFP. Kosovo and Serbia's leaders visit Brussels for talks with their European counterparts on calming tensions, with Aleksandar Vucic, president of Serbia, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti arriving for a meeting with European Council President Charles Michel, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The talks come just days after an European Union envoy, as well as diplomats from the United States, France, Germany and Italy visited both Belgrade and Pristina, for top-level talks over the issue. Serbia has begun withdrawing troops from the Kosovo border after the United States warned of an unprecedented build-up, the White House says. SOUNDBITE
The United States welcomes Serbia's announcement of a pullback from the Kosovo border following warnings from Washington, although it says it could not verify troop movements. "We will be looking for further confirmation. But if true, that would be a welcome step," State Department spokesman Matthew Miller tells reporters. SOUNDBITE
Members of the Kosovo police special forces control access to the village of Banjska, where a police officer was killed over the weekend in an ambush. Following the attack, which took place in a predominantly Serb area, the gunmen fled to a monastery, where three of them were killed in a standoff with special forces that ended on Sunday night. Kosovo's Prime Minister said around 30 heavily armed gunmen were surrounded by authorities. IMAGES
