Ancient Indian sport builds bridges across cultures in Hong Kong

Description

Overlooked by high-rises on the outskirts of Hong Kong, a group of students practise body-slam tackles and vicious ankle-wrenches at weekly training for an unlikely sport: the ancient Indian game of kabaddi. Though its professional league has a huge following in India and surrounding nations, kabaddi -- a highly physical game where the object is to tag the rival team, often by brute force -- is relatively unknown outside the region. But eight years ago two Chinese anthropologists set up a Hong Kong team to encourage integration in a city which, despite its status as an international hub, can be less than inclusive, especially when it comes to non-white and non-Chinese residents.

  • World's Longest Over-Water Bridge to Connect Hong Kong and Mainland China

One of the world's longest over-water bridges is finally nearing completion after nearly a decade of construction. The Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge is set to connect Hong Kong with Macau and Zhuhai, three major cities on the Pearl River Delta in China. The crossing consists of three cable-stayed bridges and one undersea tunnel. The construction formally began in 2009 and is due to be completed in December 2017, opening to traffic in 2018. Over 400,000 tons of steel was used to buid the project, about 60 times the amount used to build the Eiffel Tower.
