The Turkish coast guard says one person is dead and 18 are missing after a migrant sailboat carrying Syrians to Greece sinks in the Aegean sea. Rough Cut (no reporter narration).
A boat believed to be carrying hundreds of migrants is safely towed to the Greek island of Crete after a dramatic rescue complicated by near gale-force winds, a coastguard said. IMAGES
Migrants rescued by a ship chartered by NGOs disembark in Sicily and are taken care of by the authorities. The Ocean Viking, chartered by SOS Méditerranée in partnership with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), rescued 114 people on December 16, including minors and two newborns who were on an inflatable boat in distress in international waters off the coast of Libya.
