Targeting hospitals in Ukraine is a "war crime," a senior UN official tells an emergency meeting of the Security Council, called in the wake of deadly strikes that Kyiv blamed on Russia. "Intentionally directing attacks against a protected hospital is a war crime and perpetrators must be held to account," says Joyce Msuya, acting under-secretary for humanitarian affairs. SOUNDBITE
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says Nigel Farage's claim that the West provoked Russia's invasion of Ukraine is "completely wrong and only plays into Putin's hands". The far-right leader of Britain's anti-immigration Reform UK party said in a BBC interview Friday that "we've provoked this war", while adding that "of course" it was Russian president Vladimir Putin's "fault". "This kind of appeasement is dangerous for Britain's security, the security of our allies that rely on us, and only emboldens Putin further," Sunak tells reporters while on the campaign trail ahead of July 4 general elections. NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg says it is "not too late" for Ukraine to win the war, promising President Volodymyr Zelensky that more support is on the way to Kyiv as Russian forces advance. "Ukraine has been outgunned for months, forced to ration its ammunition... But it's not too late for Ukraine to prevail," the NATO secretary general says at a press conference with Zelensky. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken accuses China of "fuelling" Russia's invasion of Ukraine through the transfers of dual use materials and weapons components from Chinese businesses to Russia for use in Moscow's military expansion. "If China purports on the one hand to want good relations with Europe and other countries, it can't on the other hand be fuelling what is the biggest threat to European security since the end of the Cold War," Blinken tells a press conference after a meeting of G7 foreign ministers on the Italian island of Capri where he had urged urged his European counterparts to increase pressure on Beijing. Sweden joining NATO shows Russian President Vladimir Putin "failed" in his Ukrainian war strategy of weakening the alliance, its chief Jens Stoltenberg says. The Kremlin's invasion not only prompted formerly non-aligned nations Sweden and Finland to come under NATO's defence umbrella, but now "Ukraine is closer to NATO membership than ever before," Stoltenberg adds.
