NATO leaders agreed at a summit in Vilnius on Tuesday that they will invite Ukraine to become a member when certain conditions are reached, alliance head Jens Stoltenberg says. "We also made clear that we will issue an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO when allies agree and conditions are met," Stoltenberg tells journalists after the talks. SOUNDBITE
During the concluding G20 Finance ministers' press conference in Bangaluru, the secretary in charge of the Indian Department of Economic affairs, Ajay Seth, says that "all 18 countries felt that the war has got implications on the global economy" and needed to be mentioned. Only China and Russia did not want to sign up to the wording on Ukraine. G20 host India has also refused to condemn Russia, which is New Delhi's biggest arms supplier and has become a major source of oil for India since the invasion. SOUNDBITE
European Union chief Charles Michel reiterates support for Ukraine's closer integration with the bloc during a summit in the capital hosted by President Volodymyr Zelensky. "Ukraine is the EU, the EU is Ukraine," Michel says at a press conference with Zelensky and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. SOUNDBITE
The United States says that President Vladimir Putin's imposition of martial law in annexed Ukrainian territories shows his claim people wanted to join Russia was a "lie." "President Putin annexed these regions claiming that there were individuals in these regions who so desperately sought refuge from the Ukrainian state that they wanted to join Mother Russia," State Department spokesperson Ned Price tells reporters. "Now Putin is, I think, proving the lie by declaring martial law." SOUNDBITE
French President Emmanuel Macron announces that European Union leaders have agreed to set up "mechanisms" of "European financial solidarity" to face the surge in energy prices linked to the war in Ukraine. SOUNDBITE
Russian President Vladimir Putin joins hands with the leaders of the newly annexed Moscow-occupied regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, chanting 'Russia!'.
