Griner was detained at a Moscow airport in February, just days before Russia invaded Ukraine, and charged with drug smuggling for possessing vape cartridges with cannabis oil. The two-time Olympic gold medalist pleaded guilty and faces up to 10 years in a Russian prison. IMAGES
US President Joe Biden says that US women's basketball star Brittney Griner is "on her way home" after being freed from Russia in a prisoner swap. "She is safe. She is on a plane. She is on her way home," Biden says during remarks at the White House.
The US basketball player was convicted in Moscow on drug charges in August.
