Ukrainian authorities found a mass grave containing 440 bodies in the northeastern town of Izium that was recaptured from Russian forces days ago, officials said, including some people killed by shelling and air strikes. In Ukraine another mass grave has been discovered near the city of Bucha, northwest of the capital Kyiv. Police say the bodies show signs of torture and execution, with hands bound and bullet wounds to the head and knees. Catherine Norris Trent reports from the site of the exhumation.

Bodies with bound hands, close-range gunshot wounds and signs of torture lay scattered in a city on the outskirts of Kyiv after Russian soldiers withdrew from the area. Ukrainian authorities accused the departing forces on Sunday of committing war crimes and leaving behind a “scene from a horror movie.”
