Glacier collapses in Italian Alps, killing at least five people

A rescue team is on the site where a huge boulder detached from the Marmolada glacier in Italy's northern Alps, causing an avalanche that killed at least five people and injured eight others, according to a provisional toll from the rescue services. IMAGES

    The GSX-S1000GT Experience kicked off on Thursday 21 July from the Suzuki Italia headquarters, in the province of Turin. The GT headed through the Val di Susa towards Colle del Monginevro (1,860 m a.s.l.), before descending towards Briançon. From here the GSX-S1000GT headed towards the Col d'Izoard (2,360 m a.s.l.), going downstream before a new ascent towards Colle di Vars (2,108 m a.s.l.). The itinerary then developed following the signs for Barcelonnette, before turning towards Crots, on the banks of the Serre-Ponçon artificial lake, where the GT stopped for the night.On Friday 22 July the GSX-S1000GT Experience set off from Haute Provence, returning to Briançon to then head North West, towards Savoy and the Colle del Lautaret (2,058 m a.s.l.). From here we reached the summit of Colle del Galibier (2,642 m a.s.l.), then descending to Colle del Téléghaphe (1,566 m a.s.l.) and to Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne passing one last time at the top of Colle del Moncenisio (2,085 m a.s.l.) finally arriving in Robassomero.
